About the event
As part of Wellington Jazz Festival, The Undercurrent presents Free Status!
Free Status is a jazz fusion band blending the melodic richness of classical music, progressive rock artists like Genesis, the spontaneity of Herbie Hancock and the groove of '70s jazz-funk with an electronic edge. Their music is built around emotive melodies that connect on a deeper level, balanced with high-energy grooves and improvisation.
Led by Tommy David (keys), whose collaborations with Nathan Haines and original works have earned recognition and seen him share stages with Dire Straits Legacy, Nazareth and Hello Sailor, the band features Behzad Karkaria (drums) and Tyler Diprose (bass), respected for their work alongside Aotearoa's jazz community.
Completing the lineup is Sam Voyle (keys/sax), a longtime collaborator of Tommy's who has toured New Zealand and Australia, performed at venues including the Sydney Opera House and developed his sound through jazz house and electronic music.
